At the The Artists’ Gallery in May, Phyllis Jacob explores an artistic frontier, and photographer, Palma Brozzetti, delves into a gray tone universe in their solo exhibitions.
After many years of producing large acrylic tapestry-hung paintings on canvas, Phyllis Jacobs is starting over. Recent physical limitations, both personal and environmental, have made it imperative that Jacobs transition from her usual practice of spreading yards of canvas on the floor and applying wet layers of acrylic paint with large arm gestures to a more intimate scale and smaller motions. Fingers and hand movements now replace sweeping arms. To adjust to these changes, Jacobs was inspired by the joy of kindergarteners when they were finger painting, and so, she decided she should follow their lead. Jacobs discovered the Brushes© application for iPad2© in a New York Times article about British artist, David Hockney. Inspired by Hockney’s experiments, she played with the application and began creating new, exciting, artistic works in a form of fingerpainting on her iPad2©. In Kindergarten, Jacobs shares with you her take on an age-old art form adapted to today's state-of-the-art technology. You will be tickled by these new paintings printed on an Epson printer and mounted on cradled birch painting panels.
Phyllis Jacobs earned a B.A. from the University of Maryland, a B.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and an M.F.A. from Indiana University, with additional studies at the San Francisco Art Institute. Jacobs has taught anatomy for artists, life drawing, and abstract drawing at both Indiana University and the Atlanta College of Art. After moving to Frederick from the Washington, DC, area, she joined The Artists’ Gallery in 1994. She was the 2011 recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Grant.
Also in May at The Artists’ Gallery, photographer Palma Brozzetti presents her solo exhibition, that gray area, that explores the fine lines, shapes, and shades blurring the often illusive bright lines of life.
Palma Brozzetti is an intuitive, versatile photographer working with alternative, traditional and digital methods. She has a background in music and art, a BS in Interdisciplinary Art and Education, and a certificate in Computer Graphics.
